Emerging technologies or near future technologies contains most of the ongoing development projects and innovation in the modern world. These will be the positive technological breakthroughs which will reshape the future. Currently, the fields with the highest developments are nanotechnology, robotics, artificial intelligence and space science. 1. Flexible Electronic Gadgets

Flexible electronic is a concept to manufacture bendable and flexible electronics gadgets. The basic idea is to mount printed circuits on flexible plastic materials like polyimide or transparent polyester. There are many prototypes of flexible electronic gadgets and still, this area is under development. In 2008, Nokia unveiled a concept mobile phone that features a curved screen  which is powered by solar cells. Curved screens have many advantages such as ease of manufacturing and there are also many limitations of using curved screens. Samsung also unveiled Youm concept mobile and Galaxy Round with flexible AMOLED screen in 2013. Researchers are still working on this field to make it more advanced in the future.


2. 3D Biometrics

Biometrics is an application of statistical analysis to biological data. Biometrics is used to identify a single person in a group of a million people. They are categorized as psychological and behavioral characteristics. This technique tracks individual using a personal identification number. The system gathers information from fingerprints, DNA, Palm prints, iris recognition, retina and face recognition. Few groups of researchers are currently working on a project to improve the Biometrics system using 3D information of every single person.

Memristor is a concept to create a low power consuming storage device. It was first originated in 1971 by Leon Chua as a non-electrical device. At the present time, all types of RAMs are volatile. Memristor is a new concept in which it remembers its most recent activities when it is turned on after the power supply is switched off. Till 2012, many companies including HP labs and HRL Labs claim that they created a working prototype of the memristor. The commercial availability of Memristor is expected in 2018.

4. Electronic Nose

Over the last few years, electronic sensors or electronic nose has undergone through various researches and developments. These are considered very important from a security point of view. These sensors work similar as humans to identify, compare and data storage. In future, e-sensors could be used in the field of health and crime prevention. Currently, MRI scans and X-ray are present to detect some kind of diseases and health problems. Electronic nose can detect lung cancer and odorless chemicals that are used in explosives. In 2000, California based company, Cyrano Sciences of Pasadena created a handheld device based on electronic nose but this technology is still under huge development.

5. Molecular Electronics

Molecular electronics is an application of molecular building blocks that is used in the fabrication process of electronic gadgets. According to the Moore’s law, the number of transistors in electronics circuit doubles in every 18 months. At the present technology, deadline of Moore’s law will come after two years. Molecular electronics is a part of nanotechnology that uses a single molecule in the fabrication process of electronics components. This technology is also known as nano scale fabrication. This field is still under development to extend the limits of Moore’s law.

6. Nanoelectromechanical System

Nanoelectromechanical system or NEMS is a complex system formed from electrical and mechanical functions. It integrates nano size electronics elements with mechanical machines to form physical and chemical sensors. The use of a NEMS device increases the sensitivity of sensors to detect anything. In the future, if we implemented the NEMS device into everyday gadgets, then this could reduce the size of electronic sensors and could also improve their efficiency. Currently, this technology is under development and it is estimated that the global market of NEMS reaches over $100 million by the year 2022.


7. Spintronics

Spintronics is a developing technology which improves the fundamental electronic charges of an electron. The idea of Spintronics was unveiled in 1980s by Johnson and Silsbee. In 2012, IBM scientists performed an experiment which results in increasing the processor clock cycle. This technology helps in higher data transfer speed, greater processing speed, improving memory density and storage capacity. It enhances the properties of electron spin for practical applications.

8. E-Textiles

Electronic textiles or smart textiles are fabrics with electronic gadgets to be embedded in them. The basic methods of E-Textiles are already in use since last 1000 years. It includes the technology of wrapping of very thin metal wires like gold wires into fabrics. It includes classical electronic devices such as LED, conductors and integrated circuits and they can be printed on cotton, Tex and neoprene clothes. E-Textiles are considered as futuristic clothing and wearable technology. These fabrics could be used in health monitoring, tracking soldiers and monitoring pilot.

9. Molybdenum Disulfide

Molybdenum Disulfide is an inorganic compound that is widely used in electronics machines due to its robustness feature. Due to small atom size, it has a very low friction between two layers. It has wide applications as a dry lubricant, a catalyst in desulfurization and electrolysis of water. Its mono layers have high band gap which is considered best for the production of more efficient transistors and photodetectors. Researchers predicted that, it could be the backbone of all kinds of electronic gadgets in the future.

The thermal copper pillar bump is a micro size thermoelectric device. It is made up of thermoelectric materials and used in the printing circuit board manufacturing. The conventional cooling method of any electronic machine depends on the size of the system. Bigger fans are used for bigger systems. This technology was developed by Nextreme Thermal Solutions and is currently used by several worldwide popular companies including Intel and Amkor. When current passes through a circuit board, the thermal bump pulls the heat and transfers it to the other bump. This process is known as Peltier effect and this is how a thermal bump helps in reducing heat from electronic circuit.

11. Olfactory Technology

Olfactory tech or digital scent technology is an undergoing project which allows the transmitting and receiving of scent during digital media. In 1950s, a scientist invented a device which releases odor using fans during film shots to enhance the effects. Till 2004, many inventors unveiled their prototype but no one satisfy the need of users. In 2005, a team of Japanese researchers claims that they will invent a 3D television with the feature of touch and smell by the year 2020. Last year in March 2013, few researchers revealed a prototype of a working smelling screen.
